An Ascot Vale house with a heritage facade, soaring ceilings and original marble fireplaces awaits a new owner to enjoy its huge block size.

A historic Ascot Vale house featuring a 500-bottle wine cellar and several original features is on the market.

The circa-1900s gem at 40 The Parade is for sale via expressions of interest and has a $3.5m-$3.8m asking range.

With a tuck-pointed brick facade that is covered by a Moonee Valley Council heritage overlay, a return veranda featuring tessellated tiles from Spain, an English slate roof, ceiling rosettes, deep cornices, polished Baltic pine floorboards and three original marble fireplaces, the four-bedroom home has plenty of vintage charm.

The home sits behind an original bluestone and cast-iron front fence, with a 37m-long driveway leading to an automated four-car garage.

The main bedroom has a gas coal fireplace and a modern ensuite.

The owner of 20 years said he had not been planning on moving but his wife and children fell in love with another abode that has a pool.

He said the Ascot Vale home was in good condition when he purchased it but that he has done minor modifications, updated the bathrooms and painted the interior across the years.

The owner said the house had been a “beautiful family home” where he has hosted several New Years’ parties and birthdays, with the 1011sq m block “being big enough to have a jumping castle”.

“It (the property) could fit over 100 people quite easily,” the owner said.

The family’s pet cat and dog, a pug, have also appreciated the size of the block.

“When we moved here from an apartment, the pug was running around in figure of eights,” the owner said.

Barry Plant Essendon agent Walter Mahch said the home had attracted interest from families, many of them local.

“I think the best feature of the house is the 3.8m ceiling in the hallway and the original fireplaces,” Mr Mahch said.

“It’s in the Rothwell Hill estate, which is probably the best part of Ascot Vale, just off Union Rd, with all of its shops and cafes.”

It was “very rare” to find a home set on 1000sq m or more in Ascot Vale, he added.

Mr Mahch said the long driveway was useful for people who own a boat or caravan.

Expressions of interest close at 4pm on October 18.
