A group headed by the nonprofit Workforce Network is offering apprentice plumber and electrician courses in Llano and a plumbing course in Marble Falls beginning this month. The first Marble Falls plumbing course begins Tuesday, Oct. 17 and runs every Tuesday through Feb. 28. Classes are 6-9 p.m. and will involve three hours of self-study.
The second class starts March 7 and will run through June 27, also 6-9 p.m. Both courses will be held at the Hill Country Builders Association, 1401 Broadway in Marble Falls and will be taught by a master plumber. Llano plumbing courses run Oct. 17-Feb. 13 and Feb. 27-June 19 and will be held at the Llano County Community Center, 2249 W. Ranch Road 152, Llano. Classes run 5:308:30 p.m. every Monday and also involve three hours of self-study. Llano electrician courses also will be at the County Community Center and will run Wednesdays 5:30-8:30 p.m. The first course is Oct. 12-Feb. 15 and the second course is March 1-June 28. They will be taught by a licensed electrician.
Plumbing courses cover installation, drains, blueprints, repairs, plumbing codes, water treatment and other topics. Electrical courses address electrical safety and theory, calculations, Ohm’s law, codes, blueprints, boxes, fittings and more. Grants cover tuition and books for each course. Applicants must be 18 years old or older, permanent residents in Burnet or Llano counties, and agree to a background check.
Gail Davalos of Workforce Solutions pointed out that the courses are not for hobbyists. “These are career courses aimed at people who want to go into the electrical or plumbing trades,” she said. “They’ll point people to becoming journeymen in their trade.”
