We all know how good fresh bread smeared in butter tastes - but would you go as far as dedicating a whole platter to the spread?

That's what New York recipe developer Justine Doiron, aka Justine Snacks , did.

Sharing her communal butter board on TikTok, it's safe to say the trend has gone viral.

Since posting, Justine's video has been viewed more than 8 million times, with many saying they need to try this.

"Kind of obsessed with this," wrote one person.

Another added: "I need this in my life!!"

For others, the butter board has inspired them to try an assortment of boards.

"OK, but I'm going to try a hummus board, dessert cookie dough board, and every dip on a board now," someone said.

Another person says, "I get it but perhaps an Avocado board."

As The New York Times explains: a butter board "is less recipe, more technique: soften some butter, then feather it out on a wooden cutting board or a slate or marble cheese platter.

"Then, drizzle some honey. Grate some lemon zest. Scatter some edible flowers or some chile flakes. Add figs, maybe radishes. That, and flaky salt, artfully mask reality. Serve it with bread."

While Justine has elevated the status of the humble butter board, she says she got the idea from chef and cookbook author Joshua McFadden.

A butter board appears in his book Six Seasons: A New Way With Vegetables which he wrote with Martha Holmberg.

Speaking to The New York Times, Joshua says the key to an excellent butter board is mixing up the flavours.

"Don't try to make it all taste the same," Joshua says. "Find pockets of sweetness, pockets of salt."
