The Northwest area of East Hampton includes one of the most prestigious addresses in the entire town: Bull Path. This is a very peaceful, quiet road, even in high summer when the rest of the Hamptons is bustling. No one drives here going somewhere else.

Oddly, though, there used to be a bustling settlement here. Even in 1653, East Hampton Town records note “A cartway to ye Northwest meddow.” Settlers came here to gather salt hay and seaweed which was used for insulation, fertilizer and animal bedding. By the 1700s, the Northwest port area boasted fifteen large farms, a mill, wharves, warehouses, a pest house (for those with contagious diseases), a fish factory, a sawmill, a school, and a shipbuilding enterprise. Today nothing at all is left of these except ponds and pine woods. Poor soil doomed the farms and the port became useless once larger ships were built, as it wasn’t deep enough.

Now the area is the site of many private estates, mostly in a severely modern style. This one, set on 2.08 acres of land, is a spacious 6,000 square feet. There are six bedrooms and six bathrooms, along with a half-bath. Asking $6.495 million, the property is available via Averitt Buttry at Corcoran.

Long and low, the house is defined by clean lines and sophisticated details. Actually, there are also walls of porcelain, as the dark gray striated walls in the living/dining area are actually enormous slabs of porcelain tile. There’s also a large open kitchen with a sizable marble island.
