A classic California-style Spanish bungalow on a tree-shaded block in L.A.’s charming and centrally located though little-heralded Brookside neighborhood has come available with an asking price of $2.95 million.
Just south of hoity-toity Hancock Park and west of the posh, guard-gated Fremont Park enclave, the mid-block home sits alongside other well-maintained vintage homes built in a pleasant variety of period revival styles. Owned by low-key Hollywood couple Ray McKinnon and Marshall Persinger, who purchased the property about four years ago for a bit over $2.2 million, the 1924 bungalow retains the spirit of the white stucco and red tile roofed home’s original architecture but has been updated with the conveniences and luxuries of a well-appointed modern home.
Not exactly household names outside of Hollywood, McKinnon and Persinger are no strangers to prestigious industry awards. A hyphenate actor, writer, director and producer, McKinnon won a 2002 Oscar in the Best Short Film, Live Action category for “The Accountant,” which he shared with his late wife Lisa Blount. He later created, wrote, directed and produced SundanceTV’s Southern Gothic legal drama “Rectify” (2013-2016), which Persinger also produced and which was honored with a Peabody Award in 2014. Persinger’s producing credits also include “Army Wives” and the upcoming Mel Gibson-starring TV miniseries “The Continental.”
Mostly hidden from the street behind a sculpted hedge and surrounded by lush landscaping, the just over 2,400-square-foot home’s three bedrooms and two updated bathrooms are complemented by a detached poolside cabana with another bath. Interior highlights include glossy, dark-stained wood floors, simple but elegant crown moldings and snazzy three-pane wood-framed windows and doors.
A fireplace clad in black tile anchors the living room, the adjoining dining room spills out to a small terrace and courtyard garden, and the eat-in kitchen sports strongly veined marble counters and French doors to the backyard. Guest bedrooms, one furnished as a cozy study and the other as a retro-flavored den decked out with a plush teal velvet sofa, share an updated hall bath, while the main bedroom boasts French doors to the backyard along with a pair of walk-in closets and a mirrored and marbled bathroom.
Bordered by towering hedges that ensure privacy, the crystalline swimming pool stands out against the monochromatically green backyard that also include a couple patios for dining and lounging. Housed in what was once a detached garage, and suitable as deluxe guest quarters, a work-from-home set up, a gym, and/or a media lounge, the poolside cabana offers a roomy living space, walk-in closet, full kitchen and windowed bath.
The listing is held by Jed Weisman at Westside Estate Agency.
