Way back in 1926, noted architect Wallace Neff designed an extravagant Los Feliz compound — complete with a main mansion that has been occupied through the years by the likes of Madonna, Jenna Elfman, Katey Sagal and Rachel Sweet. That Los Pavoreales estate was later subdivided into smaller parcels; and an original piece of that property has just popped up for sale, asking a speck under $3.6 million.
Originally designed as a guest or gardener’s house belonging to the larger compound, the place was destroyed by a fire and completely rebuilt by modernist architect J.A. Murray in the late 1940s. Since updated, the Spanish Revival-style home features four bedrooms and four baths in 2,834 square feet of living space adorned throughout with the original coved ceilings, arched doorways, and a mix of hand-crafted Mexican Saltillo and blonde hardwood floors.
Tucked away on just over a quarter-acre of land, amid a large corner lot near Griffith Park, the creamy stucco and terracotta-roof structure is fronted by the original gated entrance laced with historic Moreton Bay Fig trees. A walkway passes through a lawn lined with Ficus hedges and olive trees, with steps leading up to an orangish-hued front door that opens into a foyer introducing the single-story living quarters.
From there, a fireside living room connects to a windowed dining area, while an adjacent galley-style kitchen boasts custom white oak cabinetry, a Saltillo tile backsplash, honed marble island and countertops, and top-tier appliances — including a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator and dishwasher, as well as a pricey Italian Hallman range. A cozy breakfast nook in the corner comes complete with built-in seating.
Other highlights include a light-filled den resting beneath a wood-beam ceiling and overlooking the rear gardens, along with a master retreat displaying a walk-in closet, and an inviting bath equipped with dual vanities, a Clé tile floor and large standalone shower clad in shiny cobalt blue tile. Elsewhere are two additional guest bedrooms — one with its own bath, and the other with access to a hallway bath.
Outdoors, the grounds host a pool and spa flanked by a sundeck, built-in barbecue and the aforementioned garden, which serves as an ideal spot for al fresco lounging and entertaining. There’s also a detached accessory dwelling unit sporting a kitchenette and bath that, per the listing, could be used as guest quarters, an office, a gym or media room.
The listing is held by Louise Leach and Juan Longfellow of DPP Real Estate.
