It’s safe to say, we live in a visually saturated time. Our obsession with beautiful imagery has evolved from analog photographs and magazine cut-outs collaged on cork boards to virtual platforms where we like, save, and pin our favorites. We still do both around here—after all, nothing can replace the physical act of creating a vision board—but when we curate imagery digitally, it’s easier to spot repetition and there’s one thing we’ve been noticing a lot of recently: travertine furniture.
Celebrated for its marble-like patterning and warm earth tones, travertine boasts swirls of warm, creamy hues that are unique to each piece. The organic textures, colors, and finish makes it a striking stone to add visual diversity to your home. A travertine dining table is a stylish statement that will make every meal feel special while a vintage coffee table or nightstand offers warmth and visual interest with its distinctive materiality.
So, what is travertine exactly? Many mistake it for marble but it’s actually a type of limestone that forms around mineral spring deposits. While historically, much of the travertine used in architecture and artwork came from the mountains of Italy, today, most of what we buy is from Turkey, Iran, Mexico, and Peru. Aside from travertine furniture and décor, this time-honored material also makes beautiful flooring or an entire bathroom like Pernille Teisbaek (spot the travertine tub!).
We also love the neutral beauty as a grounding piece. In Athena’s Amagansett living room, a 1970’s Angelo Mangiarotti travertine coffee table sits pretty next to a 1960s bamboo armchair by Giovanni Travasa juxtaposing delightful friction between the slick of the rattan and the porous stone. For those who are new to the sedimentary stone and want to take it slow, then incorporate smaller decorative objects into your vignettes or make it functional via a travertine tray or catchall. Or get your creative cap on like Athena who created a bench behind her sofa by repurposing the reclaimed wood shelving from her former kitchen with two travertine bases from a vintage 70s glass-topped cocktail table. Now, that’s design magic!
If you’re designing your house from scratch, travertine also makes a stunning backsplash and this checkered travertine/Calacatta stone tile floor by Montana Labelle makes our heart skip a beat. However you want to incorporate travertine in your space, we agree with Domino’s style editor, Elaina Sullivan that “it’s an easy way to make your home seem a little like an old-school Italian villa without committing to limewashing your walls.” Amen.
